A city second to none

Located just across the US border from Seattle, Vancouver is a Pacific coastal city in the southwest corner of British Columbia, Canada. A dynamic port and major centre of business and cultural activity, this is a world-class city adorned by beautiful buildings and nestled in great natural scenery.

Vancouver has a rich ethnic mix, including the second most populous Chinatown in North America. A comparatively young city, Vancouver proper was signed into existence in 1886 and has since grown rapidly into a metropolis of more than 2.6 million residents.

A consistent quality-of-life winner, Vancouver is often said to be a great place to visit and an even better place to live. The travel magazine Condé Nast voted it the “Best City in the Americas” three years in a row in 2004-2006, making particular mention of the comfortable atmosphere, friendly inhabitants, flourishing cultural scene, interesting tourist spots and good restaurants, hotels and shopping.

Outdoor paradise

Vancouver is set against the scenic backdrop of the North Shore Mountains, snow-capped in wintertime, with dense forests stretching from the slopes right down to the gorgeous beaches. For outdoor enthusiasts, Vancouver has it all – with its nearby mountains, deep valleys and breathtaking landscapes attracting hordes of nature-lovers and skiers year after year.

Along with the nearby resort town Whistler, Vancouver hosted the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympics Games. The games were widely praised as among the best winter games ever – a testament to the city’s exceptional outdoor credentials.

Vancouver has a temperate climate year-round. Summer temperatures are not extreme, with the typical day-time high around 25°C, and mid-winter temperatures typically in the region of 0–5°C. The winters can be rainy, which means ample snowfall in the mountains – much to the delight of skiers.
